Developing Innovative Solutions for People and Nature
Working collaboratively and developing successful partnerships to conserve the natural systems that sustain us all.
With offices and staff located in Berlin and London, The Nature Conservancy is working collaboratively with European governments, companies, academic institutions and leaders to strengthen support for conservation globally.
Our priority work in Europe includes strengthening policy, engaging leading companies to advance sustainable development, encouraging private philanthropy and developing impact investing strategies. Europe has a long history dealing with the large-scale interface between nature and people. It is the world’s largest common market and largest integrated economy and a leader in green finance. The region also has a much larger influence than its footprint would suggest (1/14 of world population but 1/5 of its economic output).
We are also curating and delivering knowledge in places where the Conservancy does not directly operate on the ground by working through partners. For example, the Balkan Region is home to much of Europe’s remaining wilderness and biodiversity and will likely experience a boom in hydropower development.
We are engaging with decision-makers who will determine how and where future dams are built. Using science as a guide, joining forces with financial institutions and local NGOs, we can move the hydropower industry toward more sustainable dam planning, siting and design.
With global infrastructure investment set to increase to $70 trillion over the next 15 years we know that we also need to mobilize trillions of dollars of private capital toward more sustainable growth. Europe is the crossroads of that global capital flow and building up the Conservancy’s presence in Europe will allow us to do more to create a world where people and nature thrive.
