Last December, TNC’s Global Science team convened staff from across the Caribbean in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic for an energizing, hands-on training event. Over four days, participants sharpened their skills in surveying, report writing, using AI responsibly as part of scientific research and more, all designed to support personal and professional development and to promote conservation through science.

Seventeen team members from the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Grenada and the U.S. Virgin Islands attended to learn, share and collaborate for a more resilient Caribbean. Led by expert trainers Brian Peltz, Kara Walker, John Poulsen and Dr. Steve Schill, the workshop helped strengthen staff skills in research, data analysis and scientific excellence across the region, which is critical in advancing TNC’s bold conservation goals.

The training was part of TNC’s One Conservancy Science Program (OCSP), a global network of nearly 1,000 scientists working to drive innovation, build capacity and support our mission to achieve tangible conservation results by 2030. OCSP training is coordinated by the Science Capacity Team, which provides learning opportunities and peer support, including science training, mentorship and access to resources such as journals, funding and publication assistance.
