The Nature Conservancy (TNC) today announced additional “Heart the Heartlands” events in October, including a fall color viewing atop Brockway Mountain in partnership with Eagle Harbor Township, and an ATV slow ride through the Heartlands in partnership with the Keweenaw ATV Club.

“Fall is a fantastic time to get out and enjoy the Keweenaw Heartlands and we’re eager to show off this forest’s orange, red and yellow hues from the top of Brockway Mountain and along ATV trails,” said Julia Petersen, Keweenaw Peninsula project manager for TNC in Michigan. “We ask anyone interested in enjoying either event to register so we can let you know if anything changes because of inclement weather. If you wake up the morning of either event and want to join, please do.”

The fall color viewing is set for Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Attendees will learn more about the Keweenaw Heartlands project and chat with Eagle Harbor Township officials about Brockway Mountain and how the township can improve this iconic location. Cider and donuts will be served for extra fall fun. Participants can register here.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, join TNC and the Keweenaw ATV Club for a slow ride through the Heartlands. The slow ride starts at the Mariner North Resort in Copper Harbor at 10:00 a.m. and will make a loop that will take roughly four-and-a-half to five-and-a-half hours. The slow ride will stop at scenic spots along the way for breaks and to talk about the trails, the Heartlands project, and the project's impact on the future of recreation in the Keweenaw. Registration for the slow ride is also available online.

“We’re excited to partner with The Nature Conservancy on a slow ride through the Heartlands, which are at their best at this time of year,” said Mike McMahon, trail maintenance coordinator for the Keweenaw ATV Club. “The ORV trails running throughout the Keweenaw are second to none and are vital to both outdoor recreation and our way of life. This slow ride is a great way to experience and appreciate them and see firsthand how the Heartlands project will ensure we have access to our trails forever.”

The slow ride wraps up two months of Heart the Heartlands events, which included guided hikes and information sharing at multiple community events, all meant to highlight just how special the Heartlands forest is to the community and beyond.
