Peatlands and Pineapples

A pineapple farm in West Kalimantan, Indonesia shows that restoring peatlands can—and should—go hand in hand with improving livelihoods.

The air around Tika’s farm in the small village of Malikian in West Kalimantan, Indonesia buzzes with life. The landscape is lush and vibrant, filled with the sound of trickling water and the scent of fresh pineapple. It’s a fitting background for a smallholder fruit and vegetable farm that also grows tomatoes, watermelon, peppers, corn and ginger.

But it wasn’t always like this. Certainly not in July—the midst of West Kalimantan’s dry season—in an El Niño year. Until several years ago, the air at this time of year would’ve been thick with smoke, the ground crackling and parched.

Like many farmers in the region, Tika grew up learning that the best way to clear land for planting was to set a fire and use the ashes to fertilize next year’s crops. Paired with drainage, decades of this practice ravaged the village’s rich, spongy peat soils and polluted the air with harmful emissions. In other words, using fire backfired.

It is only since Tika’s village became a fire-free community, supported by fire brigades and better water management, that things began to shift. Now, the peatlands that sustain life here are returning from the brink. And Tika’s farm—and livelihood—are flourishing.

Establishing a No-Burn Community

In West Kalimantan, fire and agriculture have been connected for generations. The practice of burning after a planting season has been passed down through families and continued even despite local bans on the practice and a host of negative impacts. Typically, during the dry season, schools close, children get sick and harvests fail as fires rage across peatlands, which become fire-prone when drained. These fires are also a major source of harmful emissions that worsen climate change.

In response, TNC’s Indonesian affiliate, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN), is supporting four fire-free villages in West Kalimantan, to practice sustainable agriculture on peatlands without burning. Working alongside the local community members, YKAN’s team of scientists is training farmers in these villages about sustainable agriculture that does not involve burning.

A Sweeter Alternative

They are also restoring the flow of water to peatlands by blocking canals, which were built to help farmers move through flooded areas and irrigate crops in the dry seasons. By letting the water flow naturally and rewet the peat soil, they’ve raised the water table and made irrigation possible throughout the year.

Farmers like Tika have benefited. Thanks to the no-burn agriculture training and rewetted peatlands, her village was able to diversify crops using raised beds that protect them from flooding and high water tables. Now they are able to plant and harvest every day of the year instead of only during the rainy season. And following a training specifically for women's groups, Tika started a small business, turning pineapples that otherwise would have been discarded due to being small or oddly shaped, into certified Halal syrup, jam and candy.

What began as a modest effort to sustain her own family has grown into a source of income and stability, even during the dry season when harvests once failed.

Global Significance

Tika’s success is a beacon of hope at a critical moment for the world’s peatlands. After all, peatlands can be found in 180 countries, and protecting and restoring them is critical for slowing the impacts of climate change. Over the last few years, more science has been done to show the extent of existing peatlands and where protecting and restoring them would be most impactful for securing carbon stores.

Pineapples may not be the solution in all of these places. Different regions require different growing conditions and present unique challenges. But YKAN’s model of rewetting peat to allow year-round irrigation, planting and harvesting shows that restoring peatlands can—and should—go hand in hand with improving livelihoods.
