Mints, Monarchs and Moths at Kankakee Sands

The mint harvesting workday is just one of the events happening at Kankakee Sands that Saturday.

Monarch Migration Celebration

In the afternoon, stick around to learn about and participate in Monarch Watch, a community science initiative to capture, tag, and release monarch butterflies as they migrate through Indiana on their journey to Mexico. Children and families are especially welcome! More on the Monarch event.

Shedding Light on Moths

Then end your day with a late summer moth discovery program! This time of year is excellent for mothing. We’ll use a mercury vapor light to attract moths to a white sheet, where we’ll try to identify each species. Each moth has a fascinating story to tell us about how important the prairies and savannas are to its brief life. This is a wonderful program for families, and children of all ages are encouraged to attend. Remember to bring a flashlight! More on this Mothing event.
