Overview
Friends of the Sands is bringing back their annual event focused on monarch butterflies on Saturday, September 13 at Kankakee Sands in Newton County!
Learn about and participate in Monarch Watch, a citizen science program to capture, tag, and release monarch butterflies as they migrate through Indiana on their journey to Mexico.
Even if the weather does not cooperate, we’ll still meet to learn more about this research and why it is done. Children and families especially welcome!
- Youth are welcome to attend with their parents.
- Accessible parking is available.
- There is a pavilion with seating available and a restroom onsite.
Please let us know you're joining us!
Email either Barb Lucas or Jeanette Jaskula to RSVP.
Mints, Monarchs and Moths at Kankakee Sands
The Monarch Migraton is just one of the events happening at Kankakee Sands that Saturday.
Mint Harvesting Workday
Start the day helping us harvest seed from mountain mint and rattlesnake master. More on this mint harvesting workday.
Shedding Light on Moths
Then end your day with a late summer moth discovery program! This time of year is excellent for mothing. We’ll use a mercury vapor light to attract moths to a white sheet, where we’ll try to identify each species. Each moth has a fascinating story to tell us about how important the prairies and savannas are to its brief life. This is a wonderful program for families, and children of all ages are encouraged to attend. Remember to bring a flashlight! More on this Mothing event.
