As part of the natural climate solutions (NCS) team, Catherine Fitzgerald is the Global Lead for Peatlands at The Nature Conservancy. She works with global, regional and local teams to collaboratively unlock equitable and durable opportunities to conserve and restore peatlands and their benefits for climate, water and people.
Her career at TNC has focused on strategy development and implementation for local and global conservation efforts and NCS, focusing on forests and wetlands.
Prior to joining the global climate team, Catherine worked in TNC’s Kentucky Chapter on community-based urban watershed conservation in Louisville, KY, where she currently lives with her family. This included leading a partnership designing the largest urban stream and wetland restoration project in the U.S., paired with a community-designed linear park, and managing a groundbreaking study connecting urban tree canopy and human health.
Before joining TNC in 2017, she worked in eco-consulting as a professional wetland scientist for six years, focusing on environmental compliance related to wetlands and streams (delineations, permitting and mitigation banking), threatened and endangered species, and environmental impact assessments.
She holds a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University, with a concentration in ecosystem science and conservation and a specialization in wetlands ecology and management, and a Bachelor of Science from Furman University with a double major in biology and Earth and environmental sciences. Her research focused on amphibians and biogeochemistry in urban wetlands and streams.
