Biography

As the Contracts Specialist for The Nature Conservancy in Massachusetts, Alex Verdeja Perez ensures that agreements meet high standards and provides staff with the support they need to focus primarily on conservation work. She likes to describe her role as “keeping the interior of the ship clean and running, so the exterior can shine.”

Alex finds joy in the support TNC offers partner organizations by handling administrative tasks—such as grants and contracts—so that they can focus on what they do best. She discovered this passion while working at a small non-profit, where she supported grassroots organizations that had the expertise and drive but not the capacity and time to pursue major funding opportunities.

Before that, Alex started her professional career with TNC in Michigan as a conservation science fellow, where she supported various science strategies through data sampling, analysis and reporting.

Originally from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Alex learned the importance of protecting our lands and ocean early on. She earned her B.S. in fisheries and aquatic sciences from Purdue University, where the stark contrast in freshwater systems deepened her commitment to conserving aquatic ecosystems.

In her free time, Alex enjoys collecting new hobbies—achieving what she proudly calls an “average level of expertise” in each. Some of those include hiking, kayaking the Charles River, baking, crocheting, sewing, line dancing, video games and reading.
