Strengthening Indigenous Networks
To strengthen the role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in securing their rights, managing and conserving their territories, and expanding their participation in decision-making processes, the Amazon Indigenous Networks project was launched.
Led by the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), with support from TNC, the project began implementation with a focus on expanding Indigenous Peoples’ access to and participation in public funding and government initiatives. It aims to build leadership and technical capacity among Indigenous leaders and organizations across the Legal Amazon, equipping them with the tools and support needed to enhance their actions and influence public policies on conservation and territorial governance in the region.

Scaling up Technical Support for Regenerative Agriculture
One of the main drivers of deforestation is the lack of access to technical assistance, particularly for small and medium-sized producers. To address this, we are expanding initiatives to increase the availability of technical support for regenerative agriculture in the Cerrado, through partnerships with key stakeholders such as Sebrae. This strategy is also linked to livestock traceability and the environmental compliance through the Reinsertion and Monitoring Program (PREM). Using geomonitoring, PREM tracks the recovery of degraded areas previously noncompliant with market protocols and supports the reintegration of rural producers into socio-environmental standards, promoting a more sustainable and inclusive production chain.
Integrated Fire Management
Adapting to climate change in the Atlantic Forest requires a strategic approach to fire management, especially in areas increasingly vulnerable to large-scale wildfires, a growing threat in this biome. Integrated Fire Management (IFM) is a key strategy employed by TNC to support ecological restoration. Whether through controlled burns or the suppression of increasingly frequent wildfires, IFM helps reduce the risk of damage to biodiversity and to critical ecosystem functions essential for recovery. This approach also contributes to the effective management and conservation of both protected and productive landscapes while fostering capacity-building and facilitating access to project financing. IFM is a practice that promotes sustainable fire control by recognizing the ecological need for prescribed burning in certain biomes and during specific periods, helping to reduce the intensity and risk of more dangerous wildfires.
TNC is advancing the IFM agenda in Brazil, combining scientific knowledge with traditional practices to strengthen the protection of natural areas. IFM promotes the planned use of fire, whether to stimulate the regeneration of native species, control invasive plants or reduce flammable materials, to prevent uncontrolled wildfires. Between 2023 and 2024, we strengthened local governance by training representatives from 12 municipalities, five fully protected conservation units (four parks and one Natural Monument), 10 sustainable use conservation units (three Environmental Protection Areas and seven Private Natural Heritage Reserves), one rural settlement, six civil society organizations, five companies and hundreds of residents and rural landowners.
Supporting National Conservation and Restoration Policies
TNC has contributed to the development and revision of key federal conservation policies in Brazil. Through a technical cooperation agreement with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), TNC is supporting the structuring of the National Climate Plan and the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (EPANB). As part of this effort, studies have been developed to assist the Ministry in providing guidelines for the establishment of Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs). TNC has also supported the revision of the National Native Vegetation Recovery Plan (PLANAVEG), a critical instrument for achieving restoration targets and addressing climate change.
Concessions for Forest Restoration
TNC partnered with the government of Pará to design a pioneering pilot project for forest restoration concessions in the Triunfo do Xingu Environmental Protection Area. This groundbreaking initiative aims to restore 10,000 hectares of native vegetation, remove an estimated 3.7 million tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere and generate more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. Its benefits also include mitigating climate extremes, preserving water systems and strengthening the region’s both environmental and economic resilience. The goal for this pilot is to serve as a foundation for a state-level public policy, as Pará has more than 1 million hectares of land eligible for restoration through similar concession models. The potential impact extends beyond the state, encompassing approximately 2.7 million hectares across the Amazon. Restoring these areas could remove nearly 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and generate more than 1 million jobs over the next 40 years.
