Stories in the Caribbean

Our Impact in 2017

A Year of Inspiring Achievements and Innovations Throughout the Region

The year 2017 was full of exciting achievements and inspiring movement in the Caribbean—as well as devastation and grave challenges following two Category-5 hurricanes that tore through the region and ravaged several islands. Moving forward after these catastrophic events, TNC was more determined than ever to help vulnerable communities adapt to climate change and invest in ecosystem restoration proven to reduce climate-related risks.

Throughout the year, we worked hard to protect and restore the ocean, coasts and coral reefs across the region and bring about tangible, lasting change for nature and communities. We completed a groundbreaking expedition to gather coral spawn for large-scale reef restoration in St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, partnering with some of the world's best coral science organizations. We supported the declaration of new marine managed areas in Haiti, Grenada and St. Kitts & Nevis, reaching nearly 11 million acres of newly protected marine environment across the region. And we restored over 100,000 mangroves and other native trees to strengthen fragile coastlines and rebuild green infrastructure that protects freshwater.

Dive into our 2017 Impact Report for more of our on-the-ground successes helping nature and people to thrive and promoting a healthy, resilient Caribbean.
