Churchill, Canada
Experience summer in a subarctic town known for polar bears and beluga whale-watching.
August 14-21, 2027
During this journey far north to Canada’s Hudson Bay, we will soak in a subarctic summertime by exploring the boreal forest, finding which wildflowers are blooming across the landscape, spotting majestic belugas (dubbed sea canaries for their vocalizations) and visiting places still vast enough for caribou to roam. We will also be on the lookout for polar bears seeking respite from the sea ice to bask in the sun. Along the way, learn how Indigenous stewardship and connection to place are shaping conservation across the province of Manitoba—one of the world’s most intact ecosystems and a stronghold for nature and people.
Highlights
- Embark on a water-based excursion by Zodiac boat to witness beluga whales moving to warm, shallow waters to give birth and feast on fish.
- Hop on a Tundra Buggy to visit the Churchill Wildlife Management Area in search of summer wildlife, including caribou, arctic foxes and maybe even polar bears!
- Ride in a dog-pulled cart through a northern boreal forest to tour Churchill's independent field station dedicated to researching the subarctic region.
