Volunteer Overview

During the month of April, we’re inviting volunteers to take part in our April Anywhere Clean‑Up Challenge, a flexible, low‑barrier way to care for the environment and give back to your community on your own schedule.

Whether it's your neighborhood, a local park, shoreline, trail or any outdoor space you love, you can join simply by doing a bit of cleanup whenever it works for you. This event is perfect for anyone who wants to take action for Earth Month but can’t attend a scheduled volunteer day. It’s flexible, accessible and lets you make a real difference right where you live.

How it Works

1. Clean up anytime in April: Head out solo, with family or with a small group. Even 20 minutes makes a difference!

2. Choose your spot: A neighborhood, park, street, shoreline or any public area that needs a little love.

3. Share your impact: Track your time, collect photos and submit it through our survey! We’ll ask you to collect:

  • The dates and approximate hours you spent cleaning up
  • Your general location (e.g., Discovery Park, Beacon Hill, Stanwood, etc.)
  • A rough estimate of how much trash you collected (e.g., two grocery bags, one bucket, etc.)
  • Photos of your clean up or your group (optional)

4. Dispose responsibly: You can use your household garbage bin or take collected trash to a local transfer center.

What You’ll Need

  • Gloves (rubber/latex gloves or gardening gloves)
  • A trash bag (grocery bags work great) or bucket
  • Trash tongs/grabbers (optional)

Safety FirstHelp keep yourself and others safe

  • Avoid private property
  • Be cautious around roads and steep or uneven terrain
  • Skip sharp or hazardous items
  • Don’t pick up anything unsafe or too heavy—report it instead to your city’s non‑emergency services

At the end of Earth Month, we’ll tally up the totals and award a few thank‑you gifts to the volunteers who volunteered the most time. We’re operating on the honor system. Just record your cleanup dates and approximate hours when you fill out the survey. Whether you contribute one hour or 20, your efforts help keep our shared spaces cleaner and greener.
