Volunteer Overview

This volunteer position will help TNC’s Southern US Division Marketing team tell an innovative conservation story by creating a historic video! We're seeking a video editor to craft a 5–10-minute film that tells the story of the partnership between The Nature Conservancy and the Department of Defense. TNC’s partnership with the Department of Defense is one of the biggest and most innovative conservation alliances across the country. It all started in North Carolina to save the Red-cockaded Woodpecker.

There were a lot of challenges, compromises, anecdotes, and incredible ideas throughout the process that led to the institution of many programs that are now replicated across the country. The incredible minds behind this work were all interviewed, portraying their anecdotes and the friendships they developed throughout the years of working together. We need your help editing this footage and turning it into a 5-10-minute historical video that tells this story and conserves the knowledge of all these conservation heroes.

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro
    • Working with large files and multiple assets
    • Sound editing, mixing, synchronization, and compression
    • Grading and correction of color to impact mood and emotion
    • Basic animation and motion graphics for titles and pop ups
  • Understanding the structure and flow of a good story
  • Creativity and passion for storytelling. Bring ideas of how to best tell the story and optimize for audience’s attention
  • Ability to apply instincts on what is the best overall appeal (look and feel of the story) and open to learning and applying TNC’s brand

Duties:

  • Develop and deliver one (5–10-minute) video
  • Develop and deliver two social media video cuts (1 ½ minutes in length)
  • Meet with supervisor once a week for a 30min-1 hour meeting to talk about progress and answer questions
  • Meet with conservation staff member leading the partnership for onboarding at the beginning and two feedback sessions along the editing process

Length of appointment: 3 months (preferred start in mid-May - flexible)

Time commitment: 5-10 hours/week

Support provided: This position will be supervised by the Communication Coordinator in the Southern US Division. Instructions for all tasks will be discussed and provided in meetings and training. During the project, TNC can provide a laptop and access to Adobe Premier, if the volunteer does not have access to these tools and software.

Benefits:

  • Experience with TNC/environmental non-profit
  • Networking opportunities with the Southern U.S. Marketing team
  • Networking opportunities with conservation staff in North Carolina
  • Potential field visit to natural area(s) purchased through the partnership in North Carolina (dependent on the geographic location of the volunteer)
  • Learn about conservation work happening in North Carolina and beyond
  • Contribute to a project with tangible results
