Volunteer Overview

Join TNC for a volunteer work party at Cascade Head Preserve!

Over the weekend, volunteers will improve the hiking trail to The Nature Conservancy’s iconic Cascade Head Preserve by adding gravel to the lower trail to elevate low areas that get muddy in the rainy season. Volunteers can do the event as an overnight and participate on both Saturday and Sunday, or can select to only participate on Saturday or Sunday.

Additional tasks may be announced closer to the date. Moving gravel is strenuous work, and it will require hiking 1-2 miles round trip with elevation gain and working on uneven terrain.

Please BRING:

  • For work (overnight): A long-sleeved work shirt and pants for two days of work, a daypack, plenty of water for the first day (there will be places to refill after the work day), layers of clothing including raingear or windbreak (dependent on forecast) and a hat. Bring gloves if you have them—if not, you can borrow ours.
  • For work (one day): Weat a long-sleeved work shirt and pants, a daypack, water for the day. Bring gloves if you have them—if not, you can borrow ours.
  • For camping: A camping chair, headlamp, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillows, pj’s, toiletries and Tupperware to pack your lunch. Musical instruments and games are highly encouraged. Let us know if you need to borrow camping gear or need a bed.
  • Overnight Accommodations:  Everyone is invited to spend Friday & Saturday nights near the preserve at a local Forest Service research facility, but you must specify by selecting the overnight ticket when registering if you intend to participate in this event as an overnight. There is plenty of flat ground for pitching tents. You’ll have access to a shared kitchen and bathroom/shower facilities. You may arrive as early as Friday at 3 PM. The group will head out to work around 10 a.m. on Saturday. If you will arrive after that, please meet us at Knight County Park.
  • FOOD:  If you are attending for one day, we will provide lunch fixings so you can make lunch or you can bring your own. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, The Nature Conservancy will provide a continental breakfast along with peanut butter and jelly lunch fixings for you to make a lunch. We’ll have a taco bar for dinner on Saturday and volunteers are welcome to bring additional items to eat, drink or share.  PLEASE NOTE: We will be providing the opportunity for volunteers over the age of 21 to have ONE alcoholic beverage.
