Event Overview

Join The Nature Conservancy for an Open Day at our Independence Creek Preserve. Recently designated as a National Natural Landmark, this preserve is a desert oasis in the beautiful Chihuahuan Desert of West Texas. Visitors can enjoy exploring the preserve on foot, swimming and exceptional wildlife watching during this Open Day.

When:

September 27, 2025 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Where:

Independence Creek Preserve, located in Sheffield, Texas.

Reservation Required:

A reservation is required to attend this open day, and spots are limited. Reservation sign-ups will be posted at the top of this page three months before the event.

Important Reminders:

  • No overnight camping is available for this event.
  • Designated parking is at Independence Creek Preserve headquarters; visitors may explore on foot from there.
  • Swimming is at your own risk.
  • Visitors should bring towels, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water and food for the day.
  • Pack everything in/out.
  • No pets, firearms or drones are permitted on the preserve.
