Event Overview

The Nature Conservancy is making visitor improvements at Douglas Woods, and you're invited to join us on either Tuesday, June 10 or Wednesday, June 11 to see how we're progressing on the improvements.

What began in 1993 as a 290-acre nature preserve, TNC's Douglas Woods in DeKalb and Steuben counties has grown into 1,370 acres of mature forest and an active reforestation. It also protects a portion of Fish Creek, a high-quality stream important to several fish and rare mussel species threatened by habitat loss.

The preserve is home to rare species such as Blanding’s turtle, the blue-spotted  salamander, and many others who inhabit its wetlands and mature trees.

The northern portion of Douglas Woods was actively farmed as recently as 13 years ago. TNC has worked to restore this habitat, with stunning results. With the restoration nearly complete, TNC seeks to make Douglas Woods a welcoming place for visitors to enjoy, where they can be inspired to learn about and act for nature.

Planned improvements include:

  • Approximately three miles of natural surface walking trails, a portion of which will be constructed with a surface that is navigable for those living with disabilities.
  • New signage that shares information about the natural and cultural history of the land.
  • Nature and wildlife viewing areas with seating.
  • Upgraded parking areas that include accessible spaces.

You're invited to join us at Douglas Woods on one of two dates to:

  • Share feedback.
  • Converse with project team.
  • Walk the new trail-in-progress at Douglas Woods South. (Wear sturdy shoes.)
  • Enjoy light refreshments.
