As Division Director for The Nature Conservancy’s Southern U.S. Division of the North America Region, Michael works closely with seven state programs (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina), as well as the Gulf of Mexico Program. Michael also chairs the Protect Land and Water Committee for the North American Region.
Michael recently was Executive Director of TNC’s Virginia Chapter, a position he held for 25 years. Prior to that he was the first Director and Ecologist for the Virginia Division of Natural Heritage, started by TNC in 1986.
Michael holds a BS and MS in biology from Virginia Tech. His studies and research focused on freshwater and forest ecology.
Michael is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia. He enjoys outdoor activities, drawing, beekeeping and gardening. He and his wife Elizabeth have restored a historic home in Richmond and have three grown daughters.
