Marco is the Executive Director for Development and Principal Gifts for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in Latin America, leading a multidisciplinary team that includes Development, Volunteer Leadership, Public Policy & Governmental Relations and Marketing & Communications.
He is a strategic, passionate and innovative leader with 25 years of global experience in building partnerships, fundraising, advocacy, volunteer action and program implementation for sustainable development. Prior to joining TNC, Marco served as Chief Development Officer at Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) the leading global standard setting organization for business sustainability.
He held previous positions with EIT Climate-KIC, Amsterdam, the Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) in Germany, and from 1999-2015 with several UN organizations – UNCDF, UNDP, UNOPS and UN Volunteers (UNV) across the globe. For UNV he led the global Volunteer Action Counts for sustainable development campaign for Rio+20 – with 64 million actions counted. In 2016, he founded Brokering Solidarity, Spain, delivering consultancies to Fundacion Avina, SwissAid and GiZ on fundraising, volunteer platforms, combatting deforestation, the 10-year Evaluation of the Brazilian Amazon Fund, and co-founding a tech start-up to facilitate volunteer action.
Marco holds a Masters in International Relations with a focus on international environmental policy from the University of Amsterdam. He started his career in Brazil with the Institute for Society, Population and Nature (96-98). Marco is Chair of the Board of the Green Light District foundation in Amsterdam; and board member of the NGO Conexsus, Brazil, KCIC Consulting Limited, Kenya; and Global Forest Bond, Brazil.
During his career he has worked globally and lived in the Netherlands, Brazil, Mozambique, USA, Germany, and Spain. He speaks Spanish, Portuguese, English, Dutch and German.
