The Sagebrush Sea

  • There are places in the west where life still feels limitless. Where big skies and glowing mountains stand watch over ancient and astonishing migrations. Where beauty is found not only in bold grandeur, but also in fine detail. And where iconic species still soar, burrow and dance.

These are lands steeped in the rich and complex stories of the past, and they are the homelands of diverse, hardworking people who care about its future. A vast, complex ecosystem teeming with life.

This is our Sagebrush Sea. Yet before our eyes and on our watch, the Sagebrush Sea is vanishing, consumed by development, degraded by invasive grasses and burned by larger, more frequent wildfires driven by climate change. The pace of destruction is staggering. More than 1 million acres are being lost each year. As the Sagebrush Sea falters, all of us pay the price. It's the kind of crisis that can feel too vast and too complicated to solve. Except, it's not.

The Nature Conservancy is working across borders and jurisdictions in seven states in the heart of this vulnerable ecosystem. With our partners, we are restoring healthy grasslands, battling back against invasives and seeding native species. We are repairing our streams and bringing water and life back to abundance. We're protecting our last great intact landscapes and keeping them connected for wildlife to flourish. And we're working handshake by handshake across states and across fences to make ranching more sustainable for our planet.

This is our chance to improve the health of millions of acres across the heart of the American West. With your help, life and hope could still be limitless. Together we find a way.
