Clean Water for People and Nature

In the Great Plains, freshwater systems shape culture, underpin economic activity and connect communities. From the headwaters of the Mississippi River and its vast fertile basin, to the wetlands supporting millions of migratory birds, to streams and springs in ancient karst and cave systems, fresh water is critical to local ways of life.

But these freshwater ecosystems are in peril. The impacts of grassland conversion, deforestation, fragmentation from dams, unsustainable farming practices, invasive species and climate change are stacking up.

How We Work

TNC has identified two priority areas where working together can accomplish more than ever for resilient fresh water in the Great Plains.

TNC’s Global Freshwater Goals

By 2030, we will:

  • Icon of a river with trees along its edges.

    1M

Safeguard or restore at least 1 million kilometers of healthy rivers and streams—enough to stretch around the globe 25 times.

  • Icon of a bird next to a cattail plant in a marsh.

    30M

Conserve 30 million hectares of healthy lakes, wetlands, deltas and floodplains.

  • Icon of three people.

    10M

Ensure more than 10 million people benefit directly from healthy freshwater ecosystems.
