William Kirsch Preserve within Ranch North Woods

William Kirsch Preserve within Ranch North Woods—an oasis in the heart of the city.

An Oasis in the Heart of the City

Just minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown…a few steps away from the house-lined streets of The Ranch neighborhood in west Little Rock…nature awaits.

Bordering Pinnacle Mountain State Park is The Nature Conservancy’s William Kirsch Preserve within Ranch North Woods. With 234 acres of fields and forest, breathtaking views of Pinnacle Mountain, and 1.7 miles of the Little Maumelle River, it is a rare slice of nature in the heart of the city.

The Conservancy invites you to become part of making the William Kirsch Preserve within Ranch North Woods a place where people of all ages can come to discover, explore and reconnect with nature.

A Special Gift for Central Arkansas

Conserving this haven was possible because of the generosity of Belinda Shults, Rob Shults, Cathy Shults Rhodes, and Ed Willis of Ranch Properties, Inc. The property was originally destined to be a housing development, but the owners, recognizing the value of open space in the community, decided they wanted to keep the land in its natural state. So in late 2014, they allowed the Conservancy to purchase the property at a generously discounted price to create a nature preserve for public use. We have moved from a vision to reality with support from generous donors.

The Conservancy worked closely with The Ranch residents to develop a public access and conservation plan that is considerate of the surrounding neighborhood. A variety of recreational features have been added to enhance the user experience including trails, a canoe launch, picnic areas, and even a floating camping canoe platform. Conservation activities including prescribed fire and planting of native grasses and wildflowers to improve quail habitat are also being demonstrated at the preserve.

Clean Water, Watchable Wildlife

Keeping the William Kirsch Preserve within Ranch North Woods in its natural state conserves the quality of water in the Little Maumelle River and its beautiful wetlands. And it helps give shelter to a variety of birds and other wildlife.

You Can Help!

The Conservancy is looking for generous friends to continue making the William Kirsch Preserve within Ranch North Woods a welcoming area for natural resources conservation and public enjoyment. Friends who understand what a positive force nature can be in the lives of all people, especially kids with few opportunities to travel outside the city. Friends who want to improve life in central Arkansas in a direct and tangible way.

Make a gift and join the fun!
