Overview

Event Overview

Participants will be introduced to chiy, a traditional Indigenous craft from Kyrgyzstan in which reed or willow stems are wrapped with colorful wool to create decorative and functional panels. Historically, chiy panels served as partitions inside the yurt while also protecting its inhabitants from wind, dust and insects, demonstrating how natural materials were used to respond to environmental conditions.

During the workshop, children and adults will create their own small chiy-inspired panels that can be displayed as wall hangings or used as decorative objects. Participants will learn a simple wrapping technique while exploring rhythm, pattern, color and composition. The process is accessible to all ages and encourages collaborative making, creativity and an appreciation for plant-based materials.
