Biography

Waqas Batley brings extensive expertise in advising governments, international institutions, banks and corporations on strategic issues at the intersection of nature, climate and sustainable economic development.

Working at ministerial and executive levels, he has established a distinguished track record in designing and implementing sustainable finance initiatives and policies that effectively blend public, private and philanthropic capital to maximize environmental and climate impact. Waqas is widely recognized within international climate diplomacy and the multilateral climate finance landscape. He has served as a committee member at numerous global climate funds including the Climate Investment Funds and the NAMA Facility. He has represented the United Kingdom at multiple UN Climate COPs and major multilateral forums, contributing to key policy developments, finance initiatives and strategic partnerships.

Prior to joining The Nature Conservancy, Waqas served as Head of EBRD's Climate Fund (High Impact Partnership for Climate Action - HIPCA) and Head of the Central Asia Nature Partnership, where he led transformative initiatives that mobilized substantial public and private capital to address critical mitigation, adaptation and nature-based challenges. Before EBRD, Waqas enjoyed an extensive career with the UK civil service, firstly with the UK Treasury and then the department for climate change gaining expertise in finance and economic policy, as well as on international climate and conversation matters.

He holds two Master's degrees from University College London in Energy and Environmental Economics and Policy, and in International Development, as well as a Bachelor's degree from Imperial College London.
