Biography

Matthew leads TNC’s Deforestation and Trade policy stream in Europe, working to support European legislative initiatives to curb global deforestation such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), and ensuring their success. Utilising TNC’s wide-ranging global experience on deforestation and conversion-free supply chains, Matthew engages with European governments and institutions to formulate strategies that will ensure the reduction of European impact on tropical forests through agricultural commodity consumption. As a member of the EU Commission’s Multi-stakeholder platform on deforestation, Matthew’s priorities are centred around work promoting greater collaboration between the EU and commodity producing countries, advocating for effective supply chain traceability, and encouraging greater consideration for other natural ecosystems at risk of agricultural conversion. You can read more of Matthew’s analysis on the implementation of the EUDR here.

Prior to joining TNC, Matthew was at the Australian Federal Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, where he worked on a number of international environmental policy priorities, including representing Australia at the UN Environment Assembly and supporting the development of the trade and sustainability chapter as part of Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations.

An Australian/Polish dual national, Matthew holds a Master’s of Public Policy from the University of Sydney.

In his spare time, he looks to escape into the forest with his gravel bike, enlarge his vinyl collection, and attempt to improve his chess skills.
