Biography

Lori Brennan has more than 20 years of experience working with a variety of regional and national non-profit organizations, including as executive director of CCS Fundraising in Philadelphia. In her role at CCS, Lori helped clients develop a culture of philanthropy, raised critical funds to support diverse missions, identified and built high-functioning boards and committees, and conducted roles/responsibilities trainings for executives, senior staff and board members.

Lori also worked at the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University in Philadelphia where she worked with scientists, researchers and educators to integrate fundraising, communications and public programming. Earlier in her career, Lori also worked for TNC in Pennsylvania where she implemented strategies to increase fundraising, raise awareness of the organization across the state and participated in planning for a $19M capital campaign.

As state director for TNC in Pennsylvania, some of Lori’s priorities include continuing with the successful integration of the organization’s Pennsylvania and Delaware programs while driving broad private and public support among their diverse constituencies. She is also working to build and maintain a high-functioning Board of Trustees who can help attract influencers and support to advance TNC’s mission throughout the two states.

Lori has a bachelor’s degree in communications from West Virginia University and lives just outside of Philadelphia with her husband and daughter. She is passionate about creating positive change and enjoys spending time outdoors, traveling and patronizing the arts.

For as long as I can remember, it has been my dream to come back to The Nature Conservancy and actively participate in advancing the mission. I am eager to apply my experiences towards advancing TNC’s mission.

TNC's executive director for Pennsylvania and Delaware

Nature is here for us, on Earth Day and every day

Published on Penn Live April 22, 2020

One of the ironies of this moment is that we are sequestered in our homes, in the midst of an especially beautiful spring in Pennsylvania, making us all aware of the season’s glory. The juxtaposition between the beauty that surrounds us and the reality of our lives right now makes it all the more difficult.

My days are filled with Zoom meeting at my desk, and my experience of the outdoor world is literally framed by the panes of glass of my window. It’s a small, but real opportunity to look beyond the confines of my home. Taking stock of the gradual greening of the trees and blooming flowers each day fills me with hope, even when, sometimes, the news seems hopeless.

My daily lens into the natural world has become so much more important. It is now impossible to take a blue sky for granted. Watching the flurry of robins symbolizes renewal, fresh beginnings and hope. I’m envious of their oblivion to the changing world around them. It’s spring, and they are building homes, laying eggs, just as they always do. I take solace in their mellow songs.

As we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, the role of the natural environment takes on new meaning. Our experiences have narrowed in recent months, but for many, the relationship to nature has increased. There is lots of discussion about creating vegetable gardens, even World War II-era victory gardens. People are getting outside and walking in their neighborhoods. In my neighborhood outside Philadelphia, I’m seeing more people walking outside than cars on the roads.

That gives me hope in a time of worry and fear.

In 1970, Philadelphia was the only city in the country that celebrated Earth Week. Thousands of people gathered in front of Independence Hall, one of our country’s most honored symbols of liberty, to bring attention to the need to care for our environment. People were moved to take action for the Earth. Fifty years later, that desire to protect the world around us comes into an even sharper focus as we move through this global pandemic.

There will be no crowds gathered at Independence Hall this week to celebrate and honor the earth, no marches to protect the environment. Instead, there will be collective and individual action, and the recognition that the natural world is here for us, as it always has been. Like the drive-by birthday parties that are now the norm for schoolchildren during this time of social distancing, our honoring and celebration of the world around us will be less public and more private.

At The Nature Conservancy, we rely on the best available science to do our work. Scientific studies have proven that when people get out in nature, the benefits are many. Just getting out in your backyard provides mental and physical benefits. Want to lower your blood pressure? Decrease anxiety? Get out in nature.

These benefits are real. And during a time where millions of Americans are filing for unemployment and schools are closed and there is so much unknown, take a moment to appreciate nature.

On this Earth Day, even if you can’t get to your favorite mountain or river or even your local park, take a look at nature right outside your door, or even just through your window.

When this situation changes—and it will—remember nature and what it does for us, today and every day. Our environmental challenges will still require us to take action.

Nature will always be here for you. I hope you will commit to being there for nature.
