Biography
Karla Suckling has served The Nature Conservancy since 2006, holding a range of roles that span operational excellence, staff development, people and project management, board engagement, and direct conservation work with endangered species. Her career reflects a consistent throughline: building the organizational conditions that allow people—and the mission—to thrive.
As Director of Strategic Operations for the North America Region, Karla partners with leaders and teams across the Conservancy to advance organizational goals in sustainability, operational excellence, development and corporate relations, and culture and engagement. She is known for translating complex priorities into clear, actionable strategies and for fostering environments where teams can do their best work.
Karla specializes in working alongside executive leaders to strengthen communication, apply systems thinking, build trust, and shape workplace dynamics that are both efficient and deeply human. She has a particular gift for identifying the strengths and growth opportunities that elevate good teams into exceptional ones—and she is unwavering in her belief that the Conservancy's greatest resource is its people.
Karla holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Geography and a Master's degree in Geography from the University of Northern Iowa, where her research focused on human–environment interaction and its impacts on human health.
