Biography

Helena Tatgenhorst is The Nature Conservancy's coastal program manager in Maine. Helena’s work focuses on implementing TNC Maine’s coastal restoration strategies. This includes coastal restoration and resilience opportunities that provide the co-benefits of increasing biodiversity, providing blue carbon storage and protecting Maine’s coastal communities from impacts of climate change. She collaborates with a variety of partners working across Maine’s coast on saltmarsh, eelgrass, and shellfish research and restoration projects.

Prior to working at TNC, Helena taught English in Bulgaria as a Fulbright awardee and worked in admissions at Tufts University School of Medicine before returning to school for her master’s degree. Helena holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geosciences from Smith College and a Master of Science in Coastal and Marine Environments from the University of Galway. Her Master’s thesis focused on testing the ability of drones to map intertidal seaweed distributions on the island of Inishmore. Outside of TNC, you can find her exploring Maine through hiking, cross country skiing and ice skating. She also enjoys swing dancing, folk dancing and playing the fiddle.
