Despite that catastrophe event, 250 of the park’s mature trees were able to survive. The destruction from the storm provided an opportunity to rethink the landscaping, with features that will now function as the city’s first line of defense against hurricanes. The Robert Moses era formal paved walkways have been removed, and the walkways that remain are now made of pervious materials. The removal of unnecessary paths created more room for open lawns, which are planted with native grasses. Trees can now happily spread their roots, in areas free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. A variety of native trees have been planted in the park, bringing the total number to 530.
