Volunteer Spotlight: Jane Aldieri
Jane Aldieri has been a donor and volunteer for The Nature Conservancy since 2018. Supporters like Jane understand what nature needs—action here in Connecticut that connects to global change.
nature.org: Jane, what are the places you care most about?
Jane Aldieri: I live in the lower Connecticut River Valley, and the river and streams are part of my every day. But I care about the entire world, so I’m committed to being part of a global environmental nonprofit, while also working locally.
nature.org: What conservation issues do you find most worrisome?
Jane Aldieri: I’m concerned about biodiversity, and the climate crisis. I care about the conservation of natural habitat and a diversity of species. I’m also worried about single-use plastic waste, and pollution in our waterways. Being part of TNC and organic gardening groups taught me about the big picture, and I take that knowledge wherever I go. You never know what information will stick with a person and create change.
nature.org: What inspired you to first get involved?
Jane Aldieri: I have gotten to better understand TNC’s work, and able to work with and support the people of TNC. I also wanted to get into the city of New Haven and remain in contact with a diverse group of people. My town of Haddam Neck is rural. The land and location is beautiful. I love where I live, surrounded by beauty, but the population isn’t as diverse as a city. I wanted to work with people of all backgrounds, sharing our commitment to the environment.
nature.org: What has been your favorite volunteer activity you have participated in, and why?
Jane Aldieri: Well, my first volunteer activity was digitizing land records documents. I volunteered as a steward at Turtle Creek in Old Saybrook. I have worked out in the field to eradicate stiltgrass on the Eightmile River, a daunting task! I worked on fencing for the nesting grounds of the piping plovers. I have been an osprey steward for 10 years. Recently, I helped with the CT Chapter’s office move in New Haven. I like doing whatever job is needed. Every little thing we do matters. Each one of us can be a part of something larger through our actions, through our activism.
