Wabash River Reforestation

Wabash River Reforestation

The Wabash River contributes only 1% of the water flowing into the Mississippi River, but that water contains 11% of the nutrients that make it to the Gulf of Mexico. This is a disproportionate amount of nutrients contributing to the Dead Zone in the Gulf. The Nature Conservancy is working with landowners, foundations and businesses that all share a commitment to improving water quality and ecological health. For example, the Conservancy and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, working together, have restored more than 44,000 acres of floodplain along the Wabash River since 1973.
