The Amazon in the News!

The main financial newspaper in Brazil (Valor Econômico) and several major news websites in Latin America are spreading the word about the recent strides to curb deforestation in the municipality of São Félix do Xingu, a key agricultural frontier in the Brazilian Amazon. Wide coverage for this subject is the result of a trip promoted by the Conservancy, in August, to put nine journalists and photographers of relevant media outlets in contact with the communities, companies and governments which work with the Conservancy in that region. The press expedition generated more than 30 stories, in four languages, about sustainable beef production, forest restoration in private properties and cacao cultivation as a sustainable alternative of income for small ranchers. Initiatives like these contributed for the drop of 80% in the deforestation level since 2009, when the Conservancy started working in the municipality. “Drawing attention to the example of São Félix do Xingu is a good way to recognize the efforts of this community and, at the same time, make the case for public opinion that it’s possible to conciliate production and conservation in the Amazon” said Ian Thompson, Amazon Conservation Program Director.
