New conservation financing opportunities for Argentina

Environmental funds have become efficient financing tools for flora and fauna conservation in several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, but they are poorly understood mechanisms in Argentina. Last November, together with Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina and Fundación Patagonia Natural, TNC organized a workshop on “Environmental Funds - Experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean and possible applications to the conservation of biodiversity in Argentina" to showcase how this iniciative has worked in other countries and promote the use of such funds in Argentina.

The workshop was sponsored by the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds and National Parks Administration of Argentina. It also had the participation of Executives Directors of two important environmental Funds in Latin America: Alberto Paniangua from PROFONANPE, Perú and José Luis Gómez from Fondo Acción, Colombia and current president of RedLAC. The workshop was a success and one important outcome is the establishment of a working group to identify information gaps as well as other key stakeholders that could participate on the initiative (including private sector, Congressional commissions, indigenous communities, academics and donors). The next meeting is planned at the end of April or the beginning of May 2013.
