Volunteers helped staff build oyster castles at Palmetto Plantation near McClellanville

Seventeen volunteers came out to help staff build oyster castes at Palmetto Plantation. The castles, constructed out of concrete blocks, will provide a surface for young oysters to settle on and build a new reef.

Palmetto Plantation is a 785-acre property near McClellanville that is protected by a Nature Conservancy conservation easement.

Volunteers pass pieces of oyster castle along the dock at Palmetto Plantation.

Volunteers pass oyster castle pieces from the dock above down a makeshift slide to volunteers in the marsh below.

The passing line continues in the marsh below the dock.

Marine Restoration Specialist Joy Brown and volunteers carefully construct an oyster castle in the marsh.

A little dirt never hurt anyone!

Many thanks to our volunteers!
