Our Director of Philanthropy, Elizabeth Foster, explains our Legacy Club and what it means for conservation in South Carolina.
What is the Legacy Club?
Elizabeth: The Legacy Club is our way of recognizing those supporters who have chosen to make a gift to The Nature Conservancy in their will. It’s simple to join. Just designate any amount to the Conservancy in your will, retirement plan or life insurance policy—there’s no minimum—and then let us know you’ve done so. We’ll be happy to add you to our mailing list for exclusive Legacy Club trips and events. We also have experienced gift planners who can help you identify the best gift for your situation.
Why would someone choose to make a gift in their will?
Elizabeth: Estate planning isn’t necessarily something people look forward to, but it has so many advantages. Many of our Legacy Club supporters have been members for years—even decades—and perhaps never felt like they could give a large gift in their lifetimes. They’re excited when they realize they can make a big impact in the future that doesn’t cost them anything today. Other people really connect with a certain project and want to give it stability into the future. Everyone has a story, and we love hearing them!
Can supporters designate their gift to a certain area or program?
Elizabeth: Absolutely, and that’s something we stress with every new legacy gift. Many of our supporters choose to designate their gift to South Carolina, so it goes toward protecting the landscapes and species they love here at home. Others may designate to a program that is near and dear to their heart. Gifts that are not designated are used for our most urgent needs worldwide.
What role do legacy gifts play in local conservation efforts?
Elizabeth: These gifts are so important to our local conservation efforts. They’ve helped us secure land deals, launch new conservation programs and so much more. We are so grateful for each and every one of these gifts and take very seriously the trust that people put in us to watch over their legacy. It’s an honor to be part of this legacy!
