Nitrogen Reduction: Expanding Our Scope

Excess nitrogen can lead to algae blooms that create unsafe water conditions and kill sea life.

In 2016, the Conservancy stepped up collaboration with Saugatuck River communities to identify how to address excess nitrogen, primarily from septic systems. With support from the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut, the Conservancy will expand its work to New London County.

“We’re eager to collaborate with communities, gain better understanding and protect the health of Long Island Sound’s harbors and bays,” says Holly Drinkuth, Conservancy outreach and watershed projects director.
