When Sound School math teacher Saras Salankar heard about the Conservancy’s Leaders in Environmental Action for the Future—or LEAF—summer internship program 2010, she immediately saw an opportunity to bring nature to her classroom.
Salankar—who incorporates the environment in her math curriculum in fun ways, like using trigonometry to find the height of a lighthouse on a Long Island Sound field trip—has promoted the program to her students ever since.
It appears to work. Every year, students from Sound School join the program, which exposes urban youth to nature and conservation careers. Thank you, Saras!
