In July 2016, the Nature Conservancy and the University of Guam conducted a 3-week coral monitoring expedition in the atolls of Chuuk and Kuop in Micronesia. With 19 scientists studying 75 sites, it was the most extensive coral monitoring survey ever conducted in Micronesia. The large amount of collected data will help direct local and regional conservation to ensure coral reefs recover and thrive. At the same time, the information will guide management of local fisheries that support local communities’ livelihoods.
