Statement from TNC on CAL FIRE Community Wildfire Prevention & Mitigation Report in response to Governor Newsom’s Executive Order on California Fires
“California’s wildfires are making history every year for the wrong reasons. We agree with the Governor and CAL FIRE that we need to put an end to the worst and deadliest wildfires through better community protection and forest restoration,” said Jay Ziegler, Director of External Affairs and Policy, The Nature Conservancy California.
“In fire-adapted forests, the path is clear. We need to thin dense thickets of small trees and brush in key areas to reduce the fuels that lead to megafires and expand use of controlled burns where safe and appropriate. We need to expand our reach across landowners and watersheds through private, state, and federal partnerships. Ecological thinning and controlled burning are the one-two punch to protect our forests for nature and people. Let’s stop making history and fund the solution.”
