September 19-24, 2022 | AN ARIZONA OASIS OF ALLURING GRANDEUR, TNC’s Hart Prairie Preserve promises a welcome respite from your day-to-day routine. Nestled within the San Francisco Peaks, the nearly 150-year-old homestead was the first stop on the Flagstaff-to-Grand Canyon stagecoach route and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This unique retreat has the world’s largest known community of globally rare Bebb willows and a mosaic of old-growth aspens, ponderosa pines and open meadows. Keep your eyes wide as you explore the property for elk herds, porcupines and more than 120 species of birds, such as the spotted owl and three-toed woodpecker. Venture off-site to the majestic Grand Canyon and to the Verde River—the lifeblood of the region.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Take an unhurried hike down the Grand Canyon’s South Kaibab Trail.
- Travel a scenic loop through high ponderosa pine forests to Sunset Crater, a volcano that last erupted 950 years ago.
