Earth Day at Fisher Slough Preserve
Washington
Volunteer Overview
To celebrate Earth Day, we'll be spending the day out at Fisher Slough Preserve planting livestakes to help shade out reed canary grass and create a healthier habitat.
Fisher Slough is a tidal marsh that was designed to produce more salmon, create more marshland, and improve the drainage to neighboring farmlands in the Skagit Delta. Our plan for the day will be to install livestakes into a section of the preserve we have been returning to for several years.
Certain plants, like willows, will grow new plants from cut sections of branches that are then planted into the ground. Unlike planting trees, where we use shovels to create a hole, livestakes require creating a narrow and deep hole using rebar before sliding the livestake in.
