Overview

Travel back in time to McMahon Lake Preserve.

Grab your lunch and tune in for a Nature Break webinar. Discover meandering moose, soaring marsh hawks, and creaking pine trees on this “behind the scenes” tour boasting over 4,000 acres of undisturbed wildlife in Michigan's remote Upper Peninsula. Special guests include Chris Cantway, TNC Restoration Associate, and Evelyn Magner from Michigan Tech University. The program format features remarks with visual slides and open comment Q&A.

This area was immortalized in Ernest Hemingway’s story “Big Two-Hearted River,” a tale of a man trying to find inner peace in the wilderness after he gets back from World War I. Hemingway himself spent many summers in northern Michigan and wrote this story based on his own memories of the area.

See you there!

Spotlight on Nature: McMahon Lake Preserve Due to its remote location and swampy nature, the area has avoided development—so visiting the preserve is like traveling back in time.
