Celebrate America’s national mammal with a weekend of fun bison-themed events. Join us for a nature preserve hike along with crafts, a scavenger hunt and a bison interpretive program. The family-friendly event will also include an obstacle course and a Bison Stampede fun run.
Bison Bash kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. with a hike at TNCs Cross Ranch preserve. TNC’s Lane Ketterman, Paulson Grassland Conservation Fellow, will lead the hike and share information about the preserve’s bison and their habitat. To have a chance to win a prize package in a raffle, you must participate in the hike, so please meet at the Cross Ranch Preserve parking area located on the west side of the gravel road about ¾ of one mile north of the entrance to Cross Ranch State Park.
A bison craft station, games, exhibits, and scavenger hunt will be available throughout the day on Saturday at Cross Ranch State Park. The Cinnamon Charge obstacle course will begin at 7:00 pm on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the amphitheater to conclude the evening with a program on bison in legends and folklore given by TNC’s Ketterman. In the event of inclement weather, all amphitheater programs will be moved inside the River Peoples Visitor Center education room.
On Sunday, we invite you to stampede with us on a variety of backcountry runs. This year we are hosting a 5K, 10K, and a 15K run! There is a pre-registration fee of $10 through Ticketleap on-line. Registration will also be available before the stampede run at Cross Ranch State Park in the River Peoples Visitor Center at 6:00 am. The runs will begin starting at 7:00 am. Registration will include race and breakfast access in addition to a memorable Bison Stampede trucker hat. A small breakfast will be served post-race to provide fruit and granola bars. We will also serve refreshments such as coffee, water, and juice. Additional details are available online.
The events throughout Bison Bash are free of charge in accordance with a daily ($7) or annual state park pass ($35). The event is open to all ages. Cross Ranch State Park and TNC’s Cross Ranch Preserve are located 12 miles southeast of Hensler via paved roads, or 6 miles by gravel. For paved access roads, follow the brown park directional signs located off Highway 25 or 83.
