Event Overview

Explore the scenic beauty, unusual landforms, and extraordinary botanical variety of Bluff Mountain, one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the Southeast.

Bluff Mountain Preserve can be enjoyed either by participating in one of our scheduled hikes ($15/person; schedule below) or by arranging a private hike ($150/trip; 10-person limit).

This year’s walks are scheduled for the following dates in 2023:

April 12*  - Join us for Bluff Volunteer Day (20 participants max)! This is great day to visit Bluff, meet other volunteers and monitors, and help give back by taking care of our local Ashe County treasure! Volunteers should bring gloves and pruning tools to help cut back the trails. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

April 30

May  13, 20, 28

June  10, 17, 25

July  1, 2, 15, 23

August  5, 13, 20

September  3, 23, 30

October 7, 15, 22

*No charge for hike on volunteer day.

The trail is a moderate, 3-mile loop with a 300’ elevation change, traversing the diversity of natural communities that make Bluff an ecological treasure. Closed-toed shoes with ankle support are best, and there are a few parts of the trail with dense herbaceous vegetation (mid to late summer), so you might want long pants. Please also bring water and snacks.

Scheduled hikes begin at 10 a.m. and can last 3-4 hours depending on the speed of the group.

If rain is in the forecast, bring a raincoat and check with your guide to confirm the hike.  If hike fees pose a challenge financially, please contact the hike leaders to make special arrangements.

For questions and information about Bluff Mountain Preserve and our scheduled hikes, please contact Ashe County Steward Kelly Clampitt at 818-620-3937 or spiritcanoelodge@gmail.com.
