The Nature Conservancy Issues Statement on Michigan State Senate Joint Resolution O

Lansing, Michigan

Earlier today, the Michigan State Senate voted on and passed Senate Joint Resolution O, calling for placement on the August primary election ballot of a question that would allow voters to approve more money from the State Park Endowment Fund to be directed toward building local parks across Michigan.

Some opponents have stated that this proposal would hurt state parks, said Helen Taylor, Michigan state director for TNC. Taylor said that under SJR O, the amount of funding available to Michigan’s state parks from the State Park Endowment Fund would increase every year. In addition, up to $5 million per year would be generated for local park development starting in 2020.

“The Nature Conservancy would like to thank all the members of the State Senate who supported SJR O and we look forward to working with all of the members of the Michigan House of Representatives who support the state park system and local parks,” Taylor said.
