New Acquisition In The Mississippi Delta
Mississippians Will Gain Access to Nearly 18,000 Acres In The South Delta
JACKSON, MS – The Nature Conservancy and State of Mississippi are proud to announce the acquisition of approximately 17,816 acres in Issaquena and Warren Counties from Anderson-Tully Company (ATCO). The Conservancy and Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) have partnered on the project, made possible through a federal grant and private donations. The partners found the opportunity to acquire the property appealing because of ATCO’s commitment to land stewardship and high-quality forest and wildlife management, among other factors.
As part of the acquisition, the Conservancy agreed to take on nearly 7,000 acres of the property, which will be transitioned to the MDWFP in the coming years.
This was a uniquely rare opportunity to conserve an iconic piece of the Mississippi Delta.
“This was a uniquely rare opportunity to conserve an iconic piece of the Mississippi Delta,” says The Conservancy’s Alex Littlejohn. “Special thanks to our partners from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Caterpillar Foundation, Mississippi Wildlife Foundation and Entergy Mississippi.”
This property, which will become the Steele Bayou Wildlife Management Area, offers a unique balance of flooded timber and cypress swamps that provide habitat for some of the largest wintering waterfowl concentrations in Mississippi. Only 2 percent of the Mississippi Delta’s original bottomland hardwood forest remain. The partners pursued this opportunity to conserve a large tract of important wildlife habitat and to increase recreational opportunities for Mississippians.
More information about plans for the land will be made available in the coming weeks.
The Nature Conservancy is a leading conservation organization working around the world to conserve ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. To date, the Conservancy and its more than one million members have helped protect 130 million acres worldwide.
