The Nature Conservancy Selects Officers and Two New Trustees

John B. Torinus Jr. Named Chair, Michael Dombeck and Richard Meeusen Added to Board

MADISON, WISCONSIN — September 23, 2009 — The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin announced today that it has elected John B. Torinus Jr., a business leader from West Bend, as chair of its Board of Trustees to help lead the organization’s efforts to conserve the state’s most important natural areas.

The Conservancy also added Michael Dombeck of Stevens Point, a former chief of the U.S. Forest Service and Director of the Bureau of Land Management, and Richard Meeusen of Delafield, chairman CEO and president of Badger Meter, to its Wisconsin Board of Trustees.

The Conservancy selected trustees John J. Magnuson of Madison and John H. Lhost of Mequon to serve as vice chairs and Ursula Muehllehner of North Freedom to the office of treasurer.

Torinus is chairman of Serigraph Inc., a specialty printing company based in West Bend that employs more than 1,200 people in the U.S., Mexico and Asia. Torinus previously worked as the business editor for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and as editor of the West Bend News.

Torinus considers Wisconsin’s best forests, prairies, lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands to be irreplaceable natural assets, and he values the Conservancy’s commitment to preserving them as well as the world’s most ecologically significant lands and waters.

“We have a talented and dedicated staff and great support from our members,” Torinus said. “That allows the Conservancy to tackle big projects like the 69,000-acre Wild Rivers Legacy Forest in northern Wisconsin, where we preserved jobs and public access.
“Nature knows no boundaries and that’s why it’s important for the Conservancy to work not only within our state but also in concert with partners to preserve the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River and to meet the worldwide challenge of climate change.”

Torinus resides in West Bend with his wife Kine.

Dombeck is University of Wisconsin System Fellow and Professor of Global Conservation at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He previously managed almost 500 million acres of public land for the federal government.

Dombeck spent his youth roaming the woods in northwest Wisconsin. He resides in Stevens Point with his wife Patricia.

Meeusen oversees Badger Meter, Inc., a Brown Deer-based company that is the leading manufacturer of water metering technology in North America. He is the founder and co-chairman of the Milwaukee 7 Water Council, an organization committed to transforming southeast Wisconsin into a hub for freshwater research, economic development and education.

Meeusen resides in Delafield with his wife Maribeth.
