In A Nutshell: The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin

  1. Our purpose is simple: to conserve natural lands and waters for people and nature.

  2. We focus on significant natural areas throughout the state that are threatened and in urgent need of protection.  Together, these priority areas protect a full array of the plants, animals, and habitats native to Wisconsin.  Click here for a map of current conservation areas.

  3. Volunteers are central to our success.  They help us manage the lands we own, volunteer in our five offices in Wisconsin, take on special projects, and much more.  Find out how you can volunteer.

  4. You can visit our nature preserves.  We own and manage nature preserves throughout the state that are open to the public for hiking, canoeing, birdwatching and other low-impact activities.  Some of our preserves are open for deer hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.  Click here for a list of preserves or for information on our deer hunting program.

  5. We work in many ways.  Some of these include buying ecologically significant land from willing sellers; negotiating land preservation agreements that keep the land in private ownership but protect it from development and other practices that would damage the natural resources; eradicating and preventing the spread of invasive plants and animals.

  6. We are a private, non-profit conservation organization. Thousands of environmentally-committed individuals, as well as foundations, corporations, and public sources fund our work.  Find out how you can help.

  7. We use our donors’ money wisely.  The vast majority of our spending goes directly to program activities in areas such as land protection and stewardship – 98% of our spending in the last fiscal year.  Click here for our most recent annual report.

  8. We are a global organization.  We work in all 50 states and in 31 other countries, primarily Canada, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific region.  Many Wisconsin members support not only our conservation work here in the state but our work in other states and countries.

  9. Check out our Wildlife out of Place print advertisement.  Special thanks to the SC Johnson Fund for providing the funding to produce and place this eye-catching ad about The Nature Conservancy's work to protect habitat for native plants and wildlife.  Publications interested in running this ad as a public service announcement should contact charrington@tnc.org or (608) 251-8140.
