Ebey’s Landing has become a very special part of Diane Cooper’s life. She’s been hiking the scenic bluff trail at the preserve since The Nature Conservancy began its stewardship program there 11 years ago.
Diane volunteers each summer a Ebey's Landing to help establish a presence for the Conservancy, which does not have an office nearby and could not otherwise monitor the Whidbey Island preserve.
"I see how things change there from year to year. After more than ten years, I know the preserve pretty well!" Six years ago her husband John retired, and now the two of them make the trip together from their home in Mukilteo.
Another preserve that depends on volunteer help during busy summer months is Foulweather Bluff on the northern tip of Kitsap County.
Ross Waggoner of Hansville, Washington has become a familiar face at the preserve, where he's been a volunteer steward for more than eight years.
Ross has nurtured his connection to this special place and now knows its forest, marsh, lagoon and beach intimately. He dedicates time each week, even during rainy winter months, to remind visitors of preserve rules, post signs and maintain trails.
