Why You Should Visit
The Voorhees Nature Preserve has trails that offer scenic views of the Rappahannock River. It is home to the bald eagle and many other birds.

Location
Northeast bank of Rappahannock River, about 45 minutes east of Fredericksburg.

Hours
Open weekends, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. (April 22 to December 17)

Size
729 acres

Conditions
There are four miles of wooded trails for self-guided walks. The difficulty level is moderate. A trail map and brochure are available at the adjacent Westmoreland Berry Farm store. There are picnic sites, restrooms and pick-your-own fruits and vegetables at the farm.

Visitors must sign in at the farm store. The bald eagle nesting area is off limits during nesting season (mid-November to mid-July).

Directions
From Fredericksburg:

  • Take Route 3 east into King George County.
  • Watch for the Route 301 intersection. Beyond this intersection, continue for 7 miles on Route 3.
  • Just after Westmoreland County line, look for Westmoreland Berry Farm sign. Turn right onto Route 634, following signs for berry farm.
  • Park in lot at the farm.

What to See: Animals
There are bald eagles as well as neotropical and migratory songbirds.

What to See: Plants
In the uplands there is a mature hardwood forest.

Why the Conservancy Selected This Site
The Voorhees Nature Preserve was donated to The Conservancy in 1994 by Mr. and Mrs. Alan M. Voorhees. It is valuable since it provides excellent roosting and nesting sites for the bald eagle.

What the Conservancy Has Done/Is Doing
Part of the Conservancy's Chesapeake Rivers Program, the Voorhees Nature Preserve is adjacent to the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge, which the Conservancy is working to expand. Volunteers are surveying populations of breeding birds.
