The Nature Conservancy and the Vermont Land Trust are working together to protect 365 acres in the towns of Monkton, Charlotte, and Hinesburg. The Raven Ridge Preserve will be owned by The Nature Conservancy and will stretch from Lewis Creek south along a scenic ridge on the boundary of Charlotte and Hinesburg to a large wetland complex in Monkton.
The land is home to a variety of wildlife including the federally endangered Indiana bat. Bobcats thrive on the ridge's rock outcroppings and ravens nest on the cliff ledges. Lewis Creek and surrounding wetlands provide a diverse ecosystem for aquatic species.
The land is a rarity in this part of the Champlain lowlands; a remarkably unfragmented stretch with expanses of three forest types: valley clayplain, mesic maple-ash-hickory-oak and dry-oak-hickory-hophornbeam. Two vernal pools on the property provide breeding habitat for wood frogs and spotted salamanders.
Help Us Create This New Preserve
Of the $850,000 in land acquisition and project costs, The Nature Conservancy and the Vermont Land Trust have secured $715,000 in federal and state grants so that all that remains is the enthusiastic support from local partners and community members to help close the gap.
Contributions of all sizes are needed. Please donate today. Contact The Nature Conservancy at 802-229-4425 or srichardson@tnc.org and tell us your gift is for Raven Ridge or fill out this pledge form and mail it to The Nature Conservancy 27 State St. Suite 4, Montpelier, VT 05602.
